Key January 2026 Tax Deadlines for Individuals

As the new year unfolds, it's crucial to stay on top of key tax deadlines. January 2026 marks essential dates for individuals concerning estimated tax payments, tip reporting, and strategic tax planning. Prepare by reviewing these important deadlines to ensure a smooth tax season.

January 2: Schedule Your Tax Preparation Appointment

The onset of January signals the beginning of tax season. If you haven't yet scheduled an appointment with your tax preparer, now is the time to do so before their calendars become fully booked.Image 1

January 12: Report Tips to Your Employer

Employees receiving more than $20 in tips during December must report them to their employers by January 12. Use IRS Form 4070 or a personal statement including your signature, name, address, Social Security number, employer’s name, and tip details. These tips influence FICA and income tax withholdings. Should your regular wages not cover these withholdings, the uncollected amount will appear in Box 8 of your W-2, requiring payment upon filing your annual return.

January 15: Fourth Quarter Estimated Tax Payment Due

Complete your fourth quarter estimated tax payment for the 2025 tax year by January 15 to avoid penalties. Failure to pay means you must file your 2025 return and settle your tax liability by February 2, 2026.Image 2

Considerations for Weekends & Holidays:
Should any deadline fall on a Saturday, Sunday, or legal holiday, it automatically extends to the next business day that isn't a holiday.

Extensions for Disaster Areas:
In regions designated as disaster areas, filing due dates may be extended. For updates on disaster designations and extensions, visit:

Maintaining awareness and prioritizing these deadlines will help you navigate the tax season effectively and avoid unnecessary penalties.
